Live with one eye open...

"The kingdom of God does not come with observation; nor will they say, 'See here!' or 'See there!'  For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you...For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day....as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man...Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot...I tell you, in that night there will be two people in one bed: one will be taken and the other left.  Two women will be grinding together: the one will be taken and the other left.  Two men will be in the field: the one will be take and the other left."  -Luke 17

This life is so busy.  Its so easy to get caught up in the daily 'hustle and bustle' of living life.  We have appointments, jobs, meetings, events, families, friends, etc.  There's so much calling for a piece of our time and energy that at the end of a normal day, it seems like its already time to start the next one.

With life the way it is, its also just as easy to fall into the trap of living life with blinders on.  Many of us live from day to day, performing our various tasks never once considering the future, the True future, Eternity.  Few, if any of us, stops to consider that there really is an end to this thing we call life (unless Jesus comes back before that time comes.)  Much less, we don't live our lives remembering the fact that there is a future judgment and then a future eternal Kingdom with Christ as the King.

In Luke 17, Jesus shares just how sudden all of this will take place.  The time of the End and judgment will be as swift as the global flood event in Noah's day - the people were warned of the coming catastrophe and they were even given a chance to respond and repent for 120 years, but then the time went up in a flash and the floodwaters of judgment came.
Or consider the story of Lot.  It was warned that judgment would come to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah for rampant sin that continued to occur in the lives of the unrepentant citizens.  The judgment from heaven came suddenly and there was nothing the people could do at that point to stop it.  In both cases, the people were so caught up in 'life' that they were too busy and occupied to care about the future judgment.  Many hardly believed it was even true.  'Who has time for that nonsense?  Rain, in the middle of the desert?  Noah, you've lost it.  Fire from heaven will destroy our cities?  Really?  Don't think so.'

But then it finally came.....

Its easy to get caught up in this life.  Its easy to forget that there is a future kingdom coming for all believers in Christ.  But its also just as easy to forget that there's a future, inescapable judgment coming.  As we live our lives, as we all must, let us live with 'one eye open' to what's coming.  Living in this manner will not only drive us to live Christ-centered lives of holiness, but it should motivate us as believers to share the Gospel with everyone we meet.
