Why be in the Word daily?
"Only be strong and very
courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My
servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left,
that you may prosper wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall
not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that
you may observe to do according to all that is written in it."
-Joshua 1:7-8a
The baton has been passed on from Moses to Joshua and it’s
time to enter Canaan and take the Promise Land. It’s interesting to note
that just before the Jews are to enter the land and take it by conquest, God
commands the people to obey and observe what they've been given in the
Scriptures (Genesis through Deuteronomy at that point), and not only that, but
they are to "meditate in it day and night." Why are
they to do that? So that they "may observe to do according
to all that is written in it."
Here's the main idea and big picture for us today: To know
God, to know how to live, and to know the 'straight and narrow path,' we must
be in God's Word regularly and often. We should talk about it and read it
aloud ("This Book...shall not depart from your mouth...") and
we should spend time thinking deeply and memorizing it ("meditate in
it") and it should be done daily ("day and night").
The Bible is described as many things; "a light
unto your path" (Ps. 119:105), "the Sword of the
Spirit" (Eph. 6:17), and better than our food ("I have
treasured the words of His mouth more than my daily bread" -Job
23:12). The Bible is not only highly important to us as Christians,
but it is a necessity - we NEED it in our lives daily, just like we need sleep,
food, and air to breath. Reader, can you say with the Psalmist, "I
meditate on Your precepts and consider Your ways. (Ps. 119:15)"
? Make sure God's Word is a daily part of your life and that you see it
as the treasure that it truly is.
